Tigers vs the Taz Devils - AL First Round

October 14, 2004

Game 1
Trachsel vs Vazquez
The Taz jump ahead 4 to 0 before the Tigers get Trachsel out in the fifth. It looks bleak but singles by Liberthal, Matsui and Kent plate two and Valentin blasts a two run ball park shot to ite the score still with no one out. After a Biggio K bonds draws a walk and heads to second on Vazquez's second wild pitch of the inning. With two outs Bill Mueller ripped an rbi double to dot Vazquez. A solo by Sexson in the eighth made the lead 6 to 4 but the Tigers had a litttle bit of concern because Bonds had left the bases full to end the inning. The fear was justified when Matthew Lecroy tied the scvore with a two out bomb off Foulke. Things were uneventful until Billy Wagner showed up in inning 12. Sexson drew a walk and a grounder by Lieberthal moved him up. Hideki Matsui brought in the game winner with a two star single. hawkins earned the win with a solid relief performance.

Game 2
Shields vs Wolf
Homers by Sexson, Martinez, Monroe and Mueller and five first inning runs overwhelmed the Taz. Bonds hits an unneeded ninth inning homer to put the finishing touches on the 12 to 0 Tiger whitewashing. Scot Shields pitched a three hitter.

Game 3
Ponson vs Lowe
A three run shot by Palmeiero gave the Taz the second inning lead but Mike Matheny's third inning clout contributed to a five spot and propel the Taz past Ponson and the Tigers 8 to 4.

Game 4
Vasquez vs Trachsel
Trot Nixon homers in the first for the 1 to 0 lead. The Tigers answer with a 1 to 7 ball park homer by Sexson. In the third Matsui hit a 1 to 7 ball park shot for the 2 to 1 lead. In the sixth Huff and finley go back to back against Mota to push the Taz in front 3 to 2. In the seventh Bonds led off the inning with a walk and Sexson comes up and rolls a ball park homer. Incredibly, the Tigers hit their third stright 1 to 7 to take the 4 to 3 lead. After a two out single by Valentin tires Vazquez, pinch-hitter Craig Monroe hits a straight out two run shot against Kershner for the 6 to 3 lead. The bullpen shuts the door and the Tigers win by that same 6 to 3 score. Thanks to Steven for greasing up my dice for me.

Game 5
Moyer vs Wolf
The Taz pound Moyer for six early runs and hold a 7 to 1 lead into the ninth. The Tigers tattoo Wagner for three runs, leaving the bases loaded but fall short 7 to 4.

Game 6
Ponson vs Lowe
Homers by Mueller and Bonds in the third extend the Tiger lead to 3 to 0. After the Taz score a run to cut the deficit to two the tigers explode for five in the bottom half driven by Sexson's grand slam homer. The tiger pen holds the Taz hitless over the last four and the Tigers win 8 to 1.
